Contract Scenic Designer, Scenic Carpenter
We are seeking experienced Scenic Designers/Carpenters to collaborate with our production team on a project-by-project basis. This role involves designing, fabricating, and installing scenic elements, stage pieces, and custom environments that elevate live events. Contract hires will work closely with producers and technical teams to bring creative concepts to life, delivering high-quality builds that meet event timelines and standards.
Scope of Work
• Design & Concept Support
o Collaborate with creative directors and producers to develop scenic concepts aligned with the event’s vision.
o Provide sketches, renderings, or build drawings as needed.
o Suggest materials, finishes, and construction methods suited to budget and production requirements.
Fabrication & Carpentry
o Construct scenic pieces, stage elements, and event environments using wood, metal, plastics, and other materials.
o Safely operate fabrication tools, equipment, and machinery.
o Ensure builds are durable, transportable, and compliant with safety standards.
Onsite Installation & Strike
o Assist with scenic load-in, set-up, and dismantle.
o Collaborate with rigging, staging, AV, and lighting teams to integrate scenic elements seamlessly.
o Make adjustments or repairs on-site as needed.
• Proven experience in scenic design and/or carpentry for live events, theater, or experiential activations.
• Strong carpentry and fabrication skills with diverse materials.
• Ability to interpret creative direction.
• Proficiency in design software (Vectorworks, SketchUp, AutoCAD) is a plus but not required for all projects.
• Must provide own basic tools; specialty equipment and shop access may be provided per project.
• Reliable, detail-oriented, and adaptable under tight deadlines.
• Strong communicator and team collaborator.
• Creative problem solver with a focus on safety and craftsmanship.
• Engagements will be structured on a per-project basis.
• Compensation to be determined by project scope and experience.
• Travel, lodging, and per diem may be covered for out-of-town projects.
• Contractors must carry appropriate insurance (general liability, workers’ comp if applicable).
